What to wear at the Cannes Film Festival – by Maxime Donzel and Géraldine de Margerie, authors of “Dresscode” (Editions Robert Laffont)

We tend to forget but Cannes is not only about heavy drinking and finding yourself miserable on the beach at dawn with sand in your mouth, it’s also a film festival. And cinema means glamour, glamour means fashion, and fashion means legions of fashionistas staring at you from head to toe thinking “really?” while pinching their lips and raising an eyebrow.

It’s your first time on La Croisette and you’re afraid of appearing on the “don’t” page of a mean magazine? Follow these tips to be the best dressed of all the festivaliers.

On the red carpet, Madame will not wear anything red of course, so she can avoid the famous 2012 Berenice Bejo debacle, when the actress walked up the steps of the palais wearing a magnificent gown that seemed to have be sown with what was left of the previous year’s carpet. The photographers were yelling “Béré? Béré?”, while the actress was screaming “here! i’m here!”. How grotesque. If you want to be noticed without having to resort to a nipslip, Madame will dare a long train à la Longoria, a gown that will please the cleaning staff for it will double as a carpet cleaner. If Madame prefers to remain discreet, there is nothing better than a light beige dress that shines a little, along with a gold handbag. The bitchy commentator will only be inspired by something like “very eternel cinema glamour chic” and move on.

If you are going to walk up the stairs surrounded by men, avoid black dresses that won’t stand out among their dark suits, and choose an Angelina Jolie emerald green, or a Kirsten Dunst turquoise. Avoid however wearing yellow chick fluff, apparently Melanie Laurent is still getting harassed on a regular basis by angry stylists who have not forgiven her and beat her violently while screaming tchip tchip. Finally, Madame won’t hesitate to queer up the stairs by wearing the coolest female tuxedo. And maybe finally some day, the movie she made will be selected. Haha just kidding, everyone knows women are just for looking pretty. Monsieur will make an effort and wear a bowtie, a real one, not the clip-on kind, because Monsieur is not a wild animal. He will try to bring a touch of originality to the land that male fashion forgot: award ceremonies. Despite I don’t know how many designers of male couture in Paris New York Milan, only one kind of outfit can be seen on the Cannes stairs: the black tux. Get inspired by the Jude Laws (white bowties) and Johnny Depps (every kind of chains and pocket watch) of our world, for they are fighting every day to save their gender from the clothing no man’s land it seems to be stuck in. We said “inspire”, not imitate Johnny Depp. Yeah, you heard me Lulu Gainsbourg.

Advice: if Monsieur wants to enter a screening but does not have credentials, he can chose the outfit of a N’golock warrior, with metal necklaces and various coloured ethnik fabric; basically the outfit of someone who couldn’t have ended up here by chance. People will think you must be the lead actor of a very moving film from Tanzania about the concept of absence and more specifically the way it is non-present. You will be allowed in because no one will dare say they haven’t seen your movie.

In case of a rainy Cannes, avoid white clothing that might become see-through making you look like an idiot who thinks the Hot d’or is still happening. If you have a chance to win a palme, try not to let your hair down, or you’ll be forced to hairflip like a madwoman, the way Maïwenn did as she was thanking everyone. She had to get physical therapy aftewards.

These tips are not intended for those going to the Queer Palm, since they will be stared at from top to bottom, but with totally different intentions *wink*wink*.

The unique strength of Xavier Dolan’s cinemaby Didier Roth-Bettoni, journalist, author of “L’Homosexualité au cinéma” (Editions La Musardine)There are many things he can be blamed for, and many detractors don’t miss an occasion by depicting him as an immature, self-centered, flashy, insignificant or affected young man. Maybe. Maybe. But what difference does it make when it comes to what jumps out at you and is really obvious: the fact that Xavier Dolan possesses the absolute grace, a rather extraordinary sense of cinema, and a very modern approach of tackling issues revolving around homosexuality and sexual identity?
With his pretty face, half-Rimbaud half-Jimmy, his young age (only 24!), and already three films in his pockets, Xavier Dolan represents probably the best that could have happened for LGBT cinema since the New Queer Cinema was born about 20 years ago, i.e. since Van Sant, Araki, Greyson, Troche &co. Of course, after saying that, I feel like I should immediately start over and nuance by adding to the list Ozon, Joao Pedro Rodrigues, Céline Sciamma, Lifshitz, Tsai Ming-liang … plus many others that we love and, each in their own manner, have been able to reformulate the relation between homosexuality and cinema.
Yes, but Dolan is not only that but also something else… he has a beautiful way of literally becoming one with his cinema and his subjects. Is it because he plays in his two first films, I killed my mother and Heartbeats? Is it because he is everywhere in his movies, behind the screenplay, editing, and even costumes? Or is it because he feeds his work with his own imaginary (visual, musical, desiring…) and that, as Laurence Anyways blatantly reveals, he never tries to intellectualize what he’s showing and offer a discourse to convince, being more into the evidence of the existence and its ups and downs? Yes, yes, yes and yes again! All of that.
Plus certain carelessness directly related to youth but surrounded with a seriousness that is both strange and heartrending. And also a sense of wonder which enables him to dare incredible scenes and slow-motion nobody would still even risk, backed by an original soundtrack lovingly filled with hits from the eighties. And then, if it still wasn’t enough, a kitsch audacity mixed with a striking precision in the day-to-day life, an accuracy of sentiments that excludes neither cruelty nor tenderness, a love for bodies that bursts in every shot, an immediate way of being perfectly right in his time and themes (teenage desires, relationships with family, identity, transsexualism…) and their treatment, being in the meantime from yesterday and certainly from tomorrow.
Let’s stop it there! Xavier Dolan is far too young to deserve such a tribute, as enthusiastic as it may be. He’s the boy, the filmmaker, the LGBT artist of all possible and hopes. Might as well say that we are (very much) looking forward to finding out what his future films will offer. While waiting for his next work entitled Tom à la ferme, rewatching Laurence Anyways clarifies pretty well the unique strength of Xavier Dolan’s cinema, his way of being cheeky when it comes to telling the most unlikely and the most humanely true stories. Any other filmmaker would have thought twice before bringing to the screen this fate of a straight teacher who decides to become a woman while trying to keep being with the woman he’s in love with and whom he lived with. Any other filmmaker would have made concessions to have the audience admit such a situation. Any other filmmaker would have tried to round out the angles. But Dolan sharpens them, makes them improper for the audience by asking his actor Melvil Poupaud to not alter his voice, his manly look, even Laurence becoming a woman is actually one and the same before and after transforming.
Dozens of examples of bravery in terms of directing could be found in this both painful and bright film. And yet, since Dolan likes nothing more than seducing, he manage to make his film irresistible with a vivacious fluidity and a science of narrative and visual twists and turns. With his grace, to put it in one word, since we need to go back to that. This is this particular grace that Xavier Dolan and his films have in common.
